Abstract:
Quantum technology including computing and sensing is gaining increasing
attention and may become the next most important technology after A.I., at least that’s
what their proponents would proclaim. Under the hood of these technologies, however,
lurks a serious manufacturing problem that is partially documented in a recent Center
for New American Security report. This talk will outline quantum’s critical enabling
technology problem in technical and economic terms. We will then focus on the future of
integrated photonics as one path to enabling the quantum technology future that many
are excited to see come to fruition.
Bio:
Dr. John Burke is the Chief Product Officer at Beacon Photonics, a technology start-up
company developing integrated photonics and optical micro-systems for several dual-
use markets.
Prior to this, Dr. Burke was the Principal Director of Quantum Science in the U.S.
Department of Defense, for which he was awarded the Office of Secretary of Defense
Metal for Exceptional Public Service. In the role, he developed the Department’s
strategy, oversaw the half a billion-dollar portfolio of programs, and executed about a
hundred million dollars a year.
Previously, Dr. Burke was a Program Manager at DARPA after leading a research
laboratory for Air Force Research Lab, developing optical atomic clocks, quantum
technology, and photonic systems.
Dr. Burke received his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in Atomic Physics.
